Sunrocket: FREE Hot Water Using the Sun!
Don’t wanna deal with building fires to boil or heat water? Let me introduce you to the Sunrocket, a portable solar hot water kettle and thermos. The Sunrocket uses solar thermal technology equipped with a vacuum tube with reflective panels to focus solar energy.
The solar kettle holds 17 ounces and can heat up in as little as 30 minutes. It serves also as a thermos to keep the liquid warm for hours after heating. The Sunrocket is a lifesaver when camping or backpacking if you want to drink a hot drink, cook or rehydrate food. Using the kettle to heat water can also kill water borne bacteria. The first thing I noticed was how stylish the product looked. It’s a well thought out design that’s scratch resistant and compact enough to throw in your backpack without taking up lots of space. The Sunrocket sports a screw on cap at the top of the device that seals the water in, but also allows steam to release when the water starts boiling.
I wanted to put the Sunrocket to the test, so I used some water from my rain barrel to fill it up. This water isn’t fit for drinking so it needs to be boiled, so it was the perfect candidate. Simply add 17 ounces of water or less and tighten the cap down. Once tightened down, pull apart the front casing of the Sunrocket (secured by magnets) to expose the solar reflector panels. This is the part of the device that works the heating magic!
Another cool feature is the 45 degree angle stand that will slide into the notches on the panel doors. Once you open the panels, you’ll see how the stand slips into place allowing the sun to hit it at the best angle for heating. It was about 80 degrees outside and full sun at around 2pm when the test started.
After about 30 mins the water was definitely hot to the touch, though not boiling yet. After letting it heat for another 30-45 mins and put my ear up to the end cap, you could hear it boiling. Steam was escaping the lid as designed. Once the lid was removed you could see bubbles shooting to the top of the surface of the water. The water was most definitely boiling and extremely hot. Please be very careful as is the case with any type of water heating device.
This product really rocks! If you’re looking for a cool item to add to your backpack, this is it.
